Stay the Course

It’s been over three months since I’ve written one of these.  I was surprised to see that fact this morning.  It’s been on the to-do list for a long time, but has not managed to bubble to the top.  There have been a lot of other things that had to be done to keep Half Batch Brewing inching (or lurching) ever closer to being a reality.  Sometimes it feels like this thing has a life of its own and I’m just along for the ride.

We are still aiming for a Spring 2017 opening.  Technically, that gives us until mid-June but, just between you and me, I think we can get it done well before that.  There’s been an uptick in attention paid to Half Batch Brewing, and it has been overwhelmingly positive.  Thanks to all of you out there spreading the word, and thanks for all the support.

First, some business progress-related updates:

Our TTB application was approved and we have received our Federal Brewer’s Notice.  So, the federal government is good with our brewing beer at Half Batch’s location (provided we stay current on all our tax obligations to them, of course).  The bulk of our brewing equipment is scheduled to be delivered in mid-March.  We are racing against that deadline to get the part of the construction work done that is necessary to place those tanks when they arrive.  Cross your fingers.

Beer news:

After a lot of struggle, we have decided on our initial ‘flagship’ beers (or at least beers we will brew with regularity).  There are five.  I’ve really tried to cut it to four somehow but have not been able to.  There are so many things to consider.  See, I’m still really conflicted about it all.  We will soon be passing the point of no return on this list of beers, though.  I’m just listing the styles as they are here and now:  Cream Ale, American IPA, British Bitter, Scottish Export Ale, Dry Stout.  I’ll get into the details on these beers more later, I promise.

I also have a 50 gallon fermentor and a pilot system that I’ll be using to brew all kinds of small batch stuff.

Assuming we can get open in the Spring, I have a really interesting seasonal beer planned.  It’s an American-Belgo Pale Ale.  More on that beer later, also.  Currently, it is planned to be the first beer brewed on our brewing system.

The sign is up.  We really like it.





Our taphandles arrived.  This design lets us switch out a magnet in the ‘beerdrop’ on the top of the tap for different styles instead of switching out the whole tap.
